Sherwood Forest is steeped in myth and history as the home of Nottingham’s most famous son: the legendary Robin Hood! Canonised in literature, film and folklore, Robin Hood’s famous ethos of “stealing from the rich and giving to the poor” has inspired visitors to wander around Sherwood for years. Around Sherwood Forest, there are plenty of reminders of the legend of Robin Hood as well as various events and festivals; it’s a great day out for all the family.
Much like other cities in the UK, Nottingham has a vibrant Caribbean heritage and, as such, has an annual carnival to celebrate the culture. Taking place in the summer, the parade is bursting with colour, music and the smells of delicious Caribbean cuisine. It’s a great way to learn about Caribbean culture and celebrate the diversity which makes our city great.
Wollaton Hall and Park was built in the 1500s and is one of the Nation’s most beautiful Grade 1 mansions from the Elizabethan era. Spread across 500 acres, the park is home to a number of wild animals, including red and fallow deer. The wetlands, grassland and woodland provide ample variety for a wide array of ecosystems to thrive. All year round, the premises has a range of different events and experiences to enjoy.
Situated underneath the Nottingham National Justice Museum, the City of Caves is a warren of sandstone caves which date back to the dark ages. These caves may have been used as housing back in the 11th century, with some caves still inhabited by troglodytes as late as 1845. The last known use of the caves was during World War Two air raids as shelter.
