Famous flooring might sound like an odd concept, but what’s beneath our feet can tell us so much about the history or purpose of a building. From Roman mosaics to richly patterned carpets, there are many types of flooring that are a work of art in themselves. Some of Nottingham’s most iconic landmarks have hidden histories or memories tied into their choice of floor; read on to learn a little more about this diverse selection of places, from a Grade II listed church to a city concert venue.
Wollaton Hall
This majestic building has been home to the Nottingham Natural History Museum since 1926, and there’s a labyrinth of corridors and rooms with beautiful floors to explore. Climb the 100 steps to the grand Prospect Room, see the stone floor of the Tudor kitchen and visit the wine cellar dug into a cave beneath the hall.
Rock City
This 1,900 capacity venue is a staple of Nottingham’s music scene, and while its by no means spectacular underfoot, this is a venue supposedly famed for its sticky floors. Rough edges are all part of a good concert hall’s charm, and Rock City has played host to music royalty including Iron Maiden, Nirvana, Blur, Queens of the Stone Age and many more. Nowadays the venue is still as popular as ever, with gigs or club nights happening most nights of the week.
Church of St Mary Magdalene
Parts of this church, such as the tower, date all the way back to the 12th century, alongside extensive Victorian building and restoration work. One of the biggest draws for visitors to this church is the floor plaque in the chancel, which marks the burial place of 19th century Romantic poet, Lord Byron. Byron died in 1824 and was refused burial in Westminster Abbey due to his ‘questionable morality’, so instead he lies at the Church of St Mary Magdalene in Hucknall, alongside his daughter, Ava Lovelace.
National Justice Museum
An independent museum based in Nottingham’s Lace Market area, the National Justice Museum stands on the old site of a Victorian courtroom, gaol and police station. Visit the museum’s sister attraction, the City of Caves to see the hidden network of sandstone caves and floors beneath the streets, plus see the original stone flooring of old dungeons and prison cells.
